- Shortly after his brother-in-law, Hans Halverson, was mustered out of the Civil War they traveled to Belgrade, Minnesota to file for land grants. His other brothers-in-law, Kittel and Halvor, went with them. They were among the first pioneer settlers in that area and were known as "the soldier boys" because they were all Civil War veterans.
