Although the name on her marker is "Mama", her given name was found through Texas DVS Death Certificates for herself and both daughters. Her first name was Augusta, and her maiden name was Kastberg. She was born in Sweden, and there married Karl Gustaf (Billing?), a high-ranking Army officer. They are said to have had two daughters, Karin (1879-1938), and Wilamena ("Villy") (1881-1941), and two sons.
According to oral history in my family (her son-in-law John Bristol was my great-uncle), Augusta Billing's husband was a retired army officer when he and their young sons were killed in a house fire, after he had rescued his wife and daughters. He went back in the house for the boys, but they all perished. "Mama" lived with relatives in Sweden while her daughters emigrated to the United States and began careers in Galveston in Swedish Massage, and later in nursing.
"Mama" followed her daughters to the United States after they were both married, and lived with each of them in Kerens until her death.
It is not clear whether Augusta and her daughters changed their last name when they came to the USA, or whether "Billing" or "Billings" was their name originally in Sweden. Neither daughter had children.
Augusta "Mama" Kastberg Billing is buried in this family plot with her daughters Karin Billing(s) Brown and Wilamena (Villy) Billing(s) Bristol; son-in-laws Dr. B.S. Brown and John Wilson Stump Bristol; and Dr. Brown's sister Minnie Brown Allan.
