As a young man in Norway, he served in the Swedish army as a coachman for the King of Sweden (at that time, Norway was a part of Sweden).
Immigrated to North America in 1870. One child, born at sea, died during the voyage. The family lived for a short time in Canada; another child born there died in infancy.
In 1872, bought property in Michigamme, MI, consisting of a tavern and a small house. The family lived in the small house while the tavern was being converted to living quarters. They occupied the larger house early in 1873.
In June of 1873, a disastrous fire in Michigamme left 3 houses standing. Theirs was one of them.
Became a U.S. citizen in 1874.
Changed last name to Benson in 1874. With the large Irish population in Michigamme, Benson was a common name. Citizenship papers reflect the old name, but tax receipts for 1874 and 1875 show property in the name of R. Bensen or R. Benson.
Died after contracting peritonitis. Had been riding a log boom to the sawmill when he fell in the lake, and he failed to change to dry clothes immediately. He was bedridden for 3 months before his death.
